Bent’s Old Fort Museum
This fort was originally constructed in 1833 by William and Charles Bent, together with Ceran St. Vrain. The purpose of the fort was as a trade point to commerce with plains Indians and trappers. The trade empire of the Bent quickly started to evolve and expand, building stores in Mexico at Santa Fe and Taos. Their primary traders were the Arapaho Indians and the Southern Cheyenne Indians.
Now you can visit this famous fort when you come to Colorado, walking down the quarter mile trail and toward the gate of the Old Fort. Inside the building, you can watch “Castle of the Plains”, a 20 minute documentary film, take self-guided tours and tours guided by living history interpreters, as well as many other activities during the year, including Kid’s Quarters in July, an event that lets kids go back in time and learn about the past; Explorer’s Encampment in October, which lets you experience the arrival of the Army of the West; and also the Traditional Holiday Celebration in December, full of games, wagon rides, storytelling, candlelight tours, toy making, and log hunt.
In the park, you will have the chance to see wonderful flora and fauna, including Spanish Barbs, a rare breed of horses, oxen, peacocks, Dominique chickens, and many other species.
