Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

The Florissant Fossil Beds National Museum is an enchanting mountain valley 35 miles west of Colorado Springs, in Colorado. This beautiful place holds fabulous remnants of the prehistoric life of our planet, such as extremely detailed fossils of plants and ancient insects as well as huge fossils of redwoods.

About 35 million years ago, the wrath of the mountains covered within their skin the then-lush valley and turned to stone the redwood trees that used to grow there. After some time, a lake started to form in the valley, and the thousands of plant and insect fossils found their final resting place among the fine-grained sediments at the bottom of the lake. These residues that lie below the water preserved the delicate fossils’ details by compacting into layers of shale. Today, the Florissant Fossil Beds are famous around the world, and since 1969 are part of the National Park System of the United States as the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.

Do not miss the chance to come to Colorado and visit the Fossil Beds. Experience nature through the programs, activities, and exhibits in the park, including walks during the summer season, books, and brochures with information about fossils.
