Fort Garland Museum
If you come to Colorado, do not forget to visit the Fort Garland Museum 25 miles east of Alamosa off U.S. Highway 160. This fort, located in southern Colorado, was built in 1858 by command of the legendary frontiersman Kit Carson. The fort had a garrison of more than one hundred men and was used to protect the earliest settlers of the San Luis Valley. In addition to visiting the museum, you can take a walk through the parade ground of the stronghold and see the adobe constructions featuring re-creations of Carson’s quarters during the commander’s time. Fort Garland not only is rich in military history, but also in culture and art, so the museum features the culture and art of the people from the Hispanic community in southern Colorado.
Fort Garland Museum has many exhibitions throughout the year, including “Buffalo Soldiers West” a permanent exhibition that explains the opportunities that black soldiers found in the military and the reasons for the controversy that arose during the Plains Indian Wars from 1866 to 1891. Additionally, you can enjoy the “Four Careers of Kit Carson”, another exhibition that follows the various careers of the legendary character, who was commandant of Fort Garland from 1866 to 1867.
